5 Best Zoos and Wildlife Parks in Singapore

Singapore punches well above its weight when it comes to wildlife parks. The Mandai Wildlife Reserve in the north of the island is home to four world-class parks clustered together, making it possible to visit two in a single day. Combined with Sentosa's aquarium, families have five outstanding wildlife experiences to choose from - each genuinely different from the others.
Why Singapore's Wildlife Parks Are Special
- Open-concept design - animals roam in naturalistic habitats rather than behind bars
- Conservation focus - breeding programmes for endangered species including orangutans and white rhinos
- Family infrastructure - pram-friendly paths, splash zones, nursing rooms and kid-friendly dining throughout
- Tropical setting - the parks themselves are surrounded by lush rainforest, making the experience immersive
Mandai Wildlife Reserve (North Singapore)
All four Mandai parks are located on Mandai Lake Road in the north of the island. A shuttle bus connects them, and multi-park tickets offer significant savings.
1. Singapore Zoo
Singapore Zoo is consistently rated among the top five zoos in the world, and for good reason. The open-concept design, pioneered here in 1973, means many animals are separated from visitors by moats and vegetation rather than cages. The result is an experience that feels remarkably close to nature.
Highlights for families include the free-ranging orangutans (you can watch them swing overhead on ropes), the white tiger exhibit, the Fragile Forest biodome where butterflies and lemurs roam free, and the Rainforest Kidzworld - a dedicated children's zone with water play, a petting area and pony rides. The Breakfast with Orangutans programme lets families dine while orangutans eat their breakfast nearby.
The zoo is home to over 300 species across 26 hectares, but the layout is manageable in a half-day visit using the tram service that loops through the park.
Best for: All ages - genuinely engaging for babies through teenagers Facilities: Tram ride (included), pram rental, multiple restaurants and snack bars, splash zone, nursing rooms, gift shops Tip: Arrive at opening time (8:30am) when animals are most active and the temperature is bearable. The tram saves significant walking. Feeding sessions are posted at the entrance - time your visit around the ones your children will enjoy most (orangutans at 9:30am, elephants at 11:15am).
2. Night Safari
The world's first nocturnal wildlife park, Night Safari is a genuinely unique experience. The park opens at 6:15pm and features over 900 animals from 100 species in naturalistic night-time habitats lit by subtle moonlight effects. A tram ride takes you through seven geographical zones, from the Himalayan foothills to Southeast Asian rainforests.
Walking trails (four routes of varying length) bring you closer to animals like fishing cats, pangolins and slow lorises. The Creatures of the Night show features animal performances, and the Thumbuakar fire-dancing show is a crowd-pleaser. Dining options include a Ulu Ulu Safari Restaurant where you eat surrounded by the night forest.
Children find the nocturnal setting magical - it's genuinely atmospheric without being frightening. The clever lighting lets you see the animals clearly while maintaining the illusion of darkness.
Best for: Ages 3+ (younger toddlers may fall asleep; the tram ride is quite dark) Facilities: Tram ride (included), restaurants, gift shop, baby change rooms, mosquito repellent recommended Tip: Book the 7:15pm tram slot online in advance - it's the most popular time and sells out on weekends. Eat dinner before the tram ride so you can walk the trails afterwards without hungry kids. Bring insect repellent.
3. River Wonders
Asia's first and only river-themed wildlife park, River Wonders takes you on a journey through the world's most iconic river systems - the Mississippi, Yangtze, Ganges, Congo and Amazon. The exhibits are beautifully designed, with massive freshwater aquariums showcasing species most people have never seen.
The undeniable highlight is the Amazon Flooded Forest - a giant underwater viewing gallery where manatees, arapaima (the world's largest freshwater fish) and river rays glide past at eye level. Children are mesmerised. The Amazon River Quest boat ride takes you through a recreated rainforest with jaguars, giant anteaters and spider monkeys visible from the water.
The park also houses Singapore's giant pandas, Kai Kai and Jia Jia, in a climate-controlled enclosure. The Once a River gallery tells the story of Singapore's own freshwater ecosystems.
Best for: All ages - the aquarium sections captivate babies upwards Facilities: Boat ride (included), restaurants, pram-friendly throughout, gift shop, air-conditioned galleries Tip: The boat ride has a minimum height requirement of 106cm to ride alone - smaller children ride on a parent's lap. Visit the panda exhibit around feeding times (10:30am and 4:30pm) for the most active viewing.
4. Bird Paradise
Opened in 2023, Bird Paradise is the newest addition to the Mandai precinct, replacing the beloved Jurong Bird Park. The park houses over 3,500 birds from 400 species across eight walk-through aviaries designed to replicate habitats from around the world - Australian dry eucalypt forest, South American wetlands, African rainforest and more.
The immersive aviaries are the star attraction. You walk through lush recreated ecosystems while birds fly freely around you - toucans, hornbills, parrots and birds of paradise. The Penguin Cove features Humboldt and king penguins in a climate-controlled enclosure. Feeding sessions and bird shows run throughout the day, and the Ocean Network lets kids watch pelicans dive for fish.
For younger children, the Egg Splash playground has water play elements, and the Wings of the World show (featuring free-flying birds of prey) is a crowd favourite.
Best for: All ages Facilities: Multiple restaurants including a bird-themed cafe, pram-friendly paths, splash playground, gift shop, tram service Tip: The walk-through aviaries are the highlight - don't rush through them. Spend time sitting quietly and the birds will come remarkably close. The Heart of Africa aviary is particularly stunning. Wear comfortable shoes as the paths are hilly.
South Singapore (Sentosa)
5. S.E.A. Aquarium - Resorts World Sentosa
While not a zoo in the traditional sense, the S.E.A. Aquarium is Singapore's premier marine wildlife attraction and deserves its place on this list. Home to over 100,000 marine animals from 1,000 species, it features one of the world's largest viewing panels - the Open Ocean habitat, a colossal window into a tank containing manta rays, sharks, goliath groupers and schools of silvery trevally.
The aquarium is arranged as a journey through marine habitats from Southeast Asia to the open ocean. The Shipwreck Habitat features a moray eel collection, the Coral Garden has clownfish and anemones (kids yell "Nemo!" constantly), and the Shark Seas tunnel lets you walk beneath circling sharks. The touch pool allows children to gently handle sea stars, sea cucumbers and horseshoe crabs under staff supervision.
The entire experience is air-conditioned and takes 2-3 hours at a leisurely pace. It's one of the best rainy-day activities in Singapore.
Best for: All ages - babies love the dark, colourful tanks; older kids love the sharks Facilities: Fully air-conditioned, cafe, gift shop, pram-friendly throughout, baby change rooms, nearby dining at Resorts World Sentosa Tip: Head to the Open Ocean tank first (turn right and follow the signs) to beat the crowds. The viewing benches there are a great spot to sit with younger children and just watch the marine life drift past.
Multi-Park Tickets and Planning
The four Mandai parks (Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Bird Paradise) offer multi-park tickets that represent significant savings over individual admission. For families planning multiple visits:
- 2-park combo - save around 10-15% versus buying separately
- 4-park combo - the best value if you plan to see everything over a few visits
- Annual membership (WildPass) - pays for itself in 2-3 visits and includes discounts on food and merchandise
Tips for Visiting
- Start early - animals are most active in the morning, and the heat builds after 11am. The zoo opens at 8:30am.
- Wear sunscreen and hats - despite the tree cover, you'll be exposed to sun on paths and at shows.
- Bring a reusable water bottle - refill stations are available throughout the parks.
- Use the tram at the Zoo and Night Safari to cover ground efficiently, then walk specific trails that interest you.
- Book Night Safari tram slots online - they sell out, especially the 7:15pm and 8:15pm sessions on weekends.
- Pack ponchos - afternoon rain showers are common and the parks are outdoors.
