The SINGAPO人 exhibition uses games, multimedia, and RFID wristbands to explore what makes Chinese Singaporean culture unique. Free admission with pram-friendly access across multiple levels including a rooftop garden.
My companion, Kitty, and I recently had the distinct pleasure of visiting the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre, and we were most favourably impressed by the 'Singapo人: Discovering Chinese Singaporean Culture' exhibition. Having approached the visit with modest expectations, we were both pleasantly surprised by the interactive, and thoroughly engaging nature of the displays. We gained a considerable appreciation for the diverse Chinese dialect groups within Singapore, and their multifaceted contributions to the rich tapestry of our society. The exhibition is thoughtfully structured, and Zone 3 proved particularly captivating. Through engaging, interactive games, we gained a deeper understanding of the nuances of Singaporean vernacular, learning how various dialects pronounce specific terms, and how the Malay, Chinese, and Hokkien languages have elegantly intertwined over time. We discovered, for instance, that the ubiquitous term 'kopi-o' is, in fact, a clever linguistic portmanteau, combining elements of both Malay, and Hokkien. The kopi making game was a particular highlight, offering an illuminating insight into the diverse varieties of coffee available, and their familiar nomenclature within Singaporean culture. We even expanded our lexicon with novel terms, such as Dai kay hao, a previously unfamiliar expression used to describe the particularly robust, or 'thick', variant of this beloved beverage. It was truly fascinating to witness how our unique Singaporean cultural identity has evolved over time, shaped by influences both internal, and external. We also greatly enjoyed learning about the diverse tapestry of Singaporean cuisine, the demographic composition of our society, and the historical occupations of various ethnic groups, gaining a more nuanced understanding of our shared heritage. The exhibition provides a comprehensive overview of Chinese Singaporean culture, taking approximately 45 minutes to an hour to fully appreciate, if one wishes to engage thoughtfully with each of the informative displays. Knowledgeable tour guides are readily available for those seeking a more structured, and in-depth exploration of the exhibits. Upon arrival, visitors are provided with an RFID wrist tag, which can be utilized to answer interactive questions at designated stations throughout the exhibition, culminating in a personalized report summarizing one's discoveries. In Zones 1, and 2, we learned about how Singapore's geography, history, politics, and economics have uniquely shaped Chinese Singaporean culture. We also deepened our understanding of the traditional Chinese cultural elements that continue to resonate within our community, and the important values passed down through generations. Beyond the 'Singapo人' exhibition, we were also invited to explore the Chinese Medication exhibition on Level 6, offering a fascinating glimpse into traditional healing practices. Finally, we ascended to the rooftop, where we were greeted by delightful Chinese New Year decorations, providing a festive, and visually appealing conclusion to our visit. Indeed, this is an exceptional cultural institution, deserving of high praise.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
One of Singapore's most engaging free cultural experiences — the exhibits prioritise participation over reading, so children stay curious and active throughout. The RFID wristband system adds a gamified element that school-age kids especially enjoy. The kopi-making game and language-discovery stations are reliable crowd-pleasers across age groups.

“As a Singaporean Chinese, I just had my first visit last week when my Queen and I decided to make an impromptu trip since we are nearby and waiting for dinner place to start operating at 5pm. She used to perform her choir SYF events next door and she really know this place well :) My Queen really loves the installations and themes, it’s already her fourth visit! We were very lucky to meet the CNY Family FUN weekend which featured Chinese lion dance performances and an amazing race event to increase our awareness by exploring different booths for freebies. There were complimentary traditional food like muah chee, tutukueh and many more up for grabs! Most importantly we’ve attended the free exhibition Singapo人, which explains how we Singaporean Chinese became who we are, based on historical events, cultural and diversity. A search for my own identity? Of course!! Aside from ethnicity groups like Hokkien, Hakka, Teochew, Cantonese, Hainanese, we also differs but united in festivals and food.”

“I think it's one of the best 'museums' I've ever visited! So interactive, informative. It doesn't bombard u with tons of text, instead they use creative forms to present the info. I get to learn a lot about the cultures here. really enjoyed it, highly recommended Only thing would be, I hope there is a good way to lower the noise from some loud visitors :)”

“Went on New Years. They had a nice exhibit on Traditional Lion Dance on the ground floor and a free exhibit interactive exhibit on the 2nd. Spent over an hour here and it was very informative. My son enjoyed the kopi making video game on the 2nd floor exhibit.”
