1 / 2Asian Civilisations Museum
📍 Downtown Core, Central
The Asian Civilisations Museum sits along the Singapore River with 13 themed galleries spanning maritime trade, faith, ceramics, and design. Plan a full afternoon — the collection rewards unhurried exploration.
During my visit to Singapore, I had the chance to explore the Asian Civilisations Museum, and it turned out to be one of the most meaningful places I visited. Located beautifully along the Singapore River, the building itself has a calm and elegant presence that immediately draws you in. What I loved most was how the museum connects different Asian cultures in one space. As someone from South Asia, I felt a quiet sense of familiarity seeing artefacts, religious sculptures, ancient jewellery, and historical pieces that reflect our shared heritage. The galleries are well organised, not overwhelming, and you can comfortably spend 2–3 hours exploring at your own pace. One of the standout sections for me was the maritime trade exhibits, which show how Asian civilisations were connected centuries ago. It really makes you appreciate how history shaped modern societies like Singapore. The atmosphere inside is peaceful, the staff are helpful, and it’s not overly crowded which makes the experience even more enjoyable. If you appreciate culture, history, and art, this museum is definitely worth visiting. For me, it wasn’t just a museum visit it felt like walking through the roots of Asia itself.
🏆 Family Action Verdict
"My son loved the music exhibit about the Chinese Qin and actually played the instrument using the touchscreen tutorial! My husband enjoyed playing chess and learning the Sugoroku by playing against a robot." Reviewers consistently recommend arriving before lunch on weekends for a calmer visit.

“Visited the Asian Civilisations Museum on Saturday and had a wonderful experience. The museum features 13 themed galleries focusing on trade (Maritime Silk Route), faith, and design, showcasing remarkable treasures such as the Tang Shipwreck, Islamic art, Chinese ceramics, Southeast Asian crafts, and contemporary Asian art. There are also engaging activities suitable for families. The museum offers guided tours in English, Chinese, and Japanese at specific dates and times, which can be easily found on their official website. I personally chose to explore the galleries at my own pace. If you’re visiting on a weekend, I’d recommend going before lunch to avoid the crowds. I arrived around 1:00 pm and left at about 3:30 pm, and noticed the crowd picking up as I was heading out.”

“A well-curated museum with focus on the diversity of Asian civilizations. The collection is extensive, ranging from ceramics to significant historical artifacts, all thoughtfully displayed. Plan to spend at least an entire afternoon here to properly enjoy everything. There is a lot to see, and it’s worth taking your time. They often host interactive or special exhibitions as well, which can take even longer, so it’s a good idea to check in advance whether the current exhibition matches your interests. A must-visit in Singapore for anyone who appreciates culture, history, and well-designed exhibitions.”

“This is a fantastic morning out. The ceramics collection is terrific if you are a researcher. They have ceramics from accross Asia, which allow you to really understand the trade routes and cultural impact. My son loved the music exhibit about the Chinese Qin (ancient zither) and actually played the instrument using the touchscreen tutorial! My husband enjoyed playing chess and learning the Sugoroki by playing against a robot. I also loved the shop!”
