Tried the set lunch today and the food is great for a very affordable price. The place is cosy and bright with warm smiles plus welcoming service from staff from the reception to the restaurant staff. I will definitely recommend to my friends and colleagues.

🏆 Family Action Verdict

Best for families needing affordable accommodation in central Tanglin with easy MRT and bus access. The location is genuinely convenient and the rooms are clean. Families staying for work-adjacent trips should bring a mobile data plan — WiFi will not support video calls or document access.

ℹ️ What to Know Before You Go

💡Bring mobile data as a backup — WiFi is reported as too slow for work tasks or streaming
No outside food or drinks permitted in the lobby — consume before entering or purchase on-site
🎟️Andrew and Karen at the front desk are specifically noted as helpful for queries and requests
🚗The on-site restaurant set lunch is open to outside diners — a good value option if visiting the area

The location is close to bus and MRT stations which is convenient for commuting, but very peaceful and quiet. The staffs are nice and supportive. I also like the room - clean and comfortable with affordable price!

It's one of the strangest things, having a hotel being openly antagonistic towards its guests, but that's how Metropolitan YMCA has positioned itself in its policies and customer service. There's no consumption of food or drinks in the hotel lobby, despite the fact that it sells food and drinks in the hotel lobby, and serves coffee and tea via a dispenser, also (you've guessed it) in the hotel lobby. The staff I had the pleasure of speaking to, assured me that it was because that it was a public area and they did not want smells to disrupt the guests utilising their table area. A table area which was designed for guest use with electrical sockets built into a nice frame, but under lock and key, which can be opened for a measly $12 SGD per hour if you ever find yourself in need of a charging port for your laptop or handphone. And you will notice that all these microtransactions are built into the hotel's guise of 'green' and 'eco-conservatism', but is simply a masquerade with the hopes of bilking as much as possible from your stay. Adequate room service? A nominal fee of SGD$20, otherwise your beds won't be made and your towels won't be changed except every three days. Shoddy laundromat with exorbitant charges? Check. Bad and damaged amenities in the rooms? Check. The best part is that these rules, the eating in the lobby, the charging for power usage in a common area meant for guests and the fact that you have to pay extra for daily housekeeping are not displayed on any clear signages, or on the booking page for the hotel. So it's only when you have had the misfortune of footing the bill after your confirmation that you will realise that it's caveat emptor. And this dreadful realisation comes not-so-subtly in the constant hounding from their inadequate, and unprofessional customer service staff, who will pester you for every perceived infarction but disappear at the sign of any request you might attempt to make. The location's great though, so if you just need some glorified space to park your bags while you explore downtown Singapore, this should do in a pinch. But don't expect anything more.

The hotel room and amenities themselves were fine but the WiFi was SO horrendously terrible. I couldn't get any work done or take any meetings in my room — heck, I couldn't even load my Google Drive page to access my documents. I had to resort to burning through 10GB of data in four days for hotspotting, or run around Singapore looking for places that were conducive for working and having meetings. There's really no excuse for a hotel in this day and age to have such abysmal WiFi. Suffice it to say I won't book this hotel again.

Overview

Metropolitan YMCA in Tanglin operates primarily as hotel accommodation with an on-site restaurant, parking, and pram-accessible facilities. Rooms are clean and comfortable at affordable rates. The set lunch menu draws outside diners alongside guests. Front desk staff — specifically Andrew and Karen — are consistently singled out as helpful. WiFi is poor and inadequate for work purposes. Management policies are strict: no outside food or drinks in the lobby, with food being sold on-site.
